Does anyone have some expertise with depthfinders and fishfinders?
My husband is looking for a depthfinder/fishfinder for a small lake in Western PA. Fishing includes crappie, stripper, walleye and catfish. The systems that are out there are a little confusing for me (I am buying for a gift). I want to find a good one but I would also like to stay under $250, is this possible? I figure it must be something like buying a computer, so it's not like he needs depths of 800', but lots of the systems claim that and also speeds of 70mph. Our lake doesn't allow motors past 20hp

it's not quite as difficult as buying a computer... they all basically all do the same thing... price is usually affected most by how clear of a picture there is, how fast/deep it reads (that has to do with the transducer... the part that is mounted to the boat below the waterline), etc.
if you are in a lake and can only go 20 mph, you can very easily go with one of the ones below $250. i know that humminbird makes several fishfinders that would work for your application. if you want to know if there is something specific he is looking for in a fishfinder, you may want to ask one of his fishing/boating buddies...
