cheap fishfinder?

I want to get my husband a decent, cheap fishfinder for his birthday, but dont have a clue what features or brands are worth the $$...please suggest a brand/model. I am looking at spending around $100. Also, what is a transducer? I've noticed some dont have them or they are broken on the ones for sale on ebay.

You can get a decent Eagle fishfinder for less than 100 dollars at Wal Mart.

A transducer is a piece of electronics that sends a SONAR signal into the water. The signal bounces off the bottom, fish, and anything else in the water, then returns to the transducer and into the fishfinder. That is how the fishfinder "finds fish". If you've ever seen a submarine movie and you hear the "ping" of SONAR, that's what a transducer sends out. Fishfinder transducers operate at a frequency much too high for a person to hear however.

The transducer is normally mounted on the outside of the transom of a boat and connects to the fishfinder display with a long wire. Most people remove the display from the boat when they get home and keep it inside. Funny, they end up selling their boat and finding out they still have the fishfinder display but the transducer was left on the boat. That's why so many end up on eBay without a transducer.
